The year is 1775 and the American Revolution has begun. Lucy Killgrew, the thirteen year old tomboy daughter of a captain in a Massachusetts militia finds herself saving her mother from roving loyalists. As a result, warrants are issued for the young family's arrest. Although Lucy and her mother take refuge with neighbors and are safe for the time being, Lucy becomes restless and decides to join her father. Tom Killgrew and the militia he commands have joined thousands of other rebel troops surrounding the British at Boston. Their reunion is bittersweet and over the next few days, Lucy becomes familiar with camp life. Just prior to the American troops entrenching themselves on Breed's Hill, Tom asks Lucy to take a wagon and retrieve some much needed muskets from a nearby blacksmith. He also gives her 200 coins to pay the costs of the blacksmith's supplies. While on her mission, Lucy disappears and never heard from again.
Stephanie McAllister is a bright 13 year old California girl. When she and her brother must spend their summer vacation with relatives in New England she thinks she's in for a long boring summer. What Stephanie did not know, was that she was embarking on more than just a dreaded holiday with family she hadn't seen since she was six. A string of inevitable events over two hundred years in the making would soon bind together the lives of Lucy Killgrew, a colonial cousin, and Stephanie McAllister.
After discovering her family's connection with colonial America, Stephanie is determined to solve the mystery of Lucy's disappearance that will lead her to the location of the muskets and coins.
